A paradise is burning

Several people, majority of them civilians, have been killed in the on-going fighting in Pakistan’s scenic valley Swat which was described by tourists as Paradise on Earth.

The militant group led by Mullah Fazlullah, known as Radio Mullah for his provocative speeches on his own illegal FM radio, is not only answering back the security forces in the area but it has threatened to launch suicide attacks in the whole country.

‘We hate these militants, we hate their activities, we are not extremists but all of this mess happened because of the government’ said a displaced man who is now thinking about a permanent residence in Peshawar and wants to remain anonymous.

When asked why he wanted to blame the government, he said it was the government which allowed this Radio Mullah to deliver his provocative speeches and recruit young boys from madrassahs and schools to carry on his hostile activities. ‘When he appeared first, the government did not stop him. But when he recruited an army of militants, terrorized people and turned our paradise in a pandemonium, the government started shelling his safe houses’ he added.

According to residents of the area, thousands of people are displaced, all schools and education centers are closed and all business activities are stopped in Swat. People are angry at both the government and the militants but any anger is useless because both the parties have their own interests and their interests are fulfilled only by wars.

‘Our life is destroyed and our beautiful Swat is burning’ wrote a girl to a local newspaper some time back. The latest of this hostility was the setting of two girls’ schools on fire by the militants. On Saturday morning, they burned the buildings of the two schools in Matta, headquarter of the militants.

Swat had the status of a tourist location for past one century. People in holidays would go there and, on return, would say that they had visited paradise. Now just the word ‘Swat’ brings to mind a situation of war, militants, hatred, hostility, beheadings and blood everywhere. A paradise is burning.

Fariha, good that you have visited Swat. Why don’t you share your observations and feelings? The valley is now completely destroyed by the fighting and hostile activities of the militants and the government forces.

The people were very normal and simple there .. most of them not educated and this place was highly under developed... it wasnt look after by the governemnt as far as i know...

You are right, Fariha. This beautiful place was not looked after by the government and that is why the militants got based and occupied it and then destroyed it. Only a day ago they set two girls’ schools on fire. And the fighting has destroyed everything.

Kashmir, Ladakh and many other tourist paradises are suffering due to conflicts and wars. Do they become more vulnerable just because they are tourist spots?

Of course, Madhuri, I think that is the reason because these places are like NAZAK flowers which can’t bear hostilities.

That is what is happening to this region. Something is needed to be done urgently otherwise the whole region might crumble soon. Pakistan and Afghanistan, beautiful countries both, have been crippled completely by politically supported ideologues. And India, perhaps, because of its democratic and secular firmament, and size, is just holding on.

But, alas, nobody is ready to bell the cat, for the cat is now camouflaged.

And, Abhishek, who do you think should take these urgent steps to prevent the region from crumbling?

If you talk about ’should’ then every one who has the power to, including you and me. But the responsibility lies where authority is assigned. The greater the authority, the greater the responsibility.

But it is unlikely that they will.

You are right Abhishek. Those who have resposibility don’t fulfil it and are going against the wishes of the people. In fact, they are ’like a woman with multiple lovers.’ Check it here http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/46175.html

hi Abdulhadi,

your article is truly an example that an ordinary man never support terrorism. The condition is same in our side, where our paradise Kashmir is burning in terrorsim. But the agony is that some people call it Jehad.

We should stand against terrorism either it is in Pakistan or India or any other part of the world.
